Short answer: Shopify has no built-in minimum order value. Its built-in quantity rules limit how many of a product can be bought, not how much an order is worth — and they only apply to B2B customers in a catalog. To require a minimum order amount from every customer, you need an app that adds a checkout rule. The rule blocks checkout when the cart is below your minimum and shows the shopper a message saying why.
What Shopify has built in
Two built-in features come close. Neither sets a minimum order value:
| Feature | What it limits | Who it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Quantity rules in B2B catalogs | Minimum, maximum and increment quantity per variant | B2B customers buying from a catalog |
| Add-to-cart limit | Maximum quantity per variant | Regular customers — not POS carts or draft orders |
| Minimum order value | Not available as a Shopify setting | |
So if you want “orders must be at least $50” for everyone who checks out, or a wholesale minimum of $1,500, the setting does not exist. The way to add it is a checkout rule: a small piece of logic an app installs into Shopify's checkout, which Shopify runs every time a shopper tries to pay. Shopify calls these cart and checkout validations.
How to set a minimum order amount with Caliper
- Install Caliper from the Shopify App Store. The free plan includes one rule.
- Click Add rule and choose Cart value limit.
- Enter your minimum value, and a maximum too if you want one. Choose the currency.
- Write the message shoppers see when the rule blocks. Placeholders are filled in with live numbers:
{min},{max}and{actual}. For example:Orders must be at least {min}. Your cart is {actual}. - Check the preview: add a product to the test cart and the editor shows whether checkout would be blocked, with your message.
- Click Publish. The rule is live in your checkout as soon as Caliper confirms it.
That's it — no theme code. To test it for real, add something cheap to your cart and go to checkout: it will stop with your message.
What “order amount” means
The minimum is compared with the cart subtotal: the merchandise total after product discounts, but before order-wide discount codes, shipping and tax. That is the subtotal Shopify gives checkout rules, and it means a shipping fee can never be what lifts an order over your minimum.
If you sell in more than one currency, a rule applies only when the shopper's cart is in the rule's currency. Caliper deliberately does not convert between currencies, because exchange rates move between checkout and the moment an order is reviewed. Add one rule per currency you sell in.
When the block happens
A minimum cannot stop someone building a cart. Every cart passes through small amounts on its way to a large one, so blocking an “add to cart” below the minimum would make the store unusable. The rule stops the cart at checkout instead.
To tell shoppers earlier, Caliper can show your rule's message on product and cart pages, with the numbers filled in — so a shopper reads “Orders must be at least $50. Your cart is $32.” before checkout instead of at it. These warnings are an optional block you switch on in your theme editor; checkout enforces the rule either way.
Minimum quantity instead of amount
If what you need is a quantity — “at least 6 of this product”, “sold in packs of 12”, or a minimum across a collection — the same app does it with a different rule type. Rules can be limited to customers with a tag (such as wholesale), to countries, or to B2B buyers.
Where no minimum can reach
Checkout rules run when a shopper goes through checkout. Orders created any other way never reach them — for every app, not just Caliper: point of sale sales, draft orders (where staff can click “Ignore and create order”), subscription renewals, and orders created by other apps. How each of these works →
Caliper re-checks those orders against your rules after they arrive and emails you when one broke a rule, so you can decide what to do before it ships.
